Map your new life
Centegra launched the Centegra
STAR Program
®
in August 2013
with funding from the Gavers
Community Cancer Foundation.
Initially, the program focused on
people with breast or head-and-
neck cancers and then expanded
to include those with lung cancer.
Today, people with all types of
cancer are served.
The Centegra STAR Program
®
addresses common physical
problems that cancer patients
experience from diagnosis to
during and after treatment,
including fatigue, joint stiffness,
weakness, memory loss, anxiety,
depression, lymphedema,
insomnia, balance issues, muscle
and bone pain, nutrition, and
issues with eating and swallowing.
The team includes:

support groups. She met with a dietitian for
nutritional counseling. She saw a physical
therapist to learn how to rebuild strength
and deal with lymphedema. She even
received help choosing a wig.
“The Centegra STAR Program
®
has been
a huge help because I can turn to the people
in it for advice about how to handle and
manage problems as they arise,” Kawell says.
MOVING AHEAD WITH LIVING
Kawell, now 53, finished her cancer
treatment in December 2012. However, her
recovery and survivorship will continue for
the rest of her life.
Without the support of Centegra and the
Centegra STAR Program
®
, it would have
been tempting to withdraw or give up, she
admits. After all, cancer affects everything,
including mind, body, soul, self-esteem,
relationships, work and finances.
Kawell reflects: “It would be easy for
Centegra to treat you and then say: ‘OK,
you’re done. Go on and live your life.’ Some
people could do that. Other people struggle
and really need extra help to find their way
back to wellness after cancer. I’m so glad
Centegra understands that.”
QUALITY OF LIFE, HEALTH
To understand the Centegra STAR
Program
®
, think of rehabilitation after
an accident or injury, says Trish Dalton,
Centegra STAR Program
®
coordinator.
People healing broken bones or torn
ligaments need rehabilitation to get their
strength and movement back.
People who’ve gone through cancer
often need rehabilitation, too. Treatment
itself can be hard on the body. Says Dalton:
“There are millions of people out there who
are walking around thinking: ‘I had cancer.
This is the lot I’ve been dealt. I just have to
deal with pain or limitations.’ That is just
not true.”
It’s not only physical rehabilitation a
person may need. Cancer can take a toll on
many aspects of life. Some people may also
need assistance managing their emotions,
finances, employment and dietary needs.
Kawell, who initially came to the
Centegra Gavers Breast Center for a
mammogram of a suspicious lump in her
breast, was helped by various Centegra
and Centegra STAR Program

services
during her subsequent biopsies, surgery and
16 sessions of chemotherapy. She attended
