HealthSystem
Centegra Health System heart specialist Priya
Sateesha, MD, has three words of advice
about metabolic syndrome: Take it seriously.
This syndrome is diagnosed when a
person has three or more of the following risk
factors:
w
w
Extra fat around the middle
w
w
High levels of fats—including triglycerides
and LDL, the bad cholesterol—in the blood
w
w
High blood pressure
w
w
Low levels of HDL, the good cholesterol
w
w
Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance
Taken one by one, these risk factors might
not set off alarms. As a group, though, they do.
“They could lead to full-blown Type 2
diabetes and heart disease,” Dr. Sateesha
says. “This can create a very high-risk
situation.”
Weight loss, a healthy diet and regular
exercise are keys for treating both diabetes
and metabolic syndrome.
Centegra Health System’s Diabetes
