Surviving
O
n as many Saturday
mornings as
possible, Cheryl Kawell
drives from her home in
Lake in the Hills to
Crystal Lake for one of
the most comforting
parts of her week: a
fitness class for
cancer survivors.
It’s held in the
welcoming waters
of the therapy
pool at Centegra
Health Bridge
Fitness Center.
Kawell, a breast
cancer survivor, says
the warm water and
gentle stretching soothe her body. The
companionship of her classmates feeds her
soul.
“All of the people in the class have had
cancer, and many have had breast cancer,”
she says. “They just know what I’ve gone
through. When you hear how they are
feeling, you realize, ‘This is what lots of
people feel.’”
Kawell learned about the water-fitness
class through the Centegra STAR Program
®
.
The STAR (Survivorship Training and
Rehab) Program helps cancer patients
deal with some of the impairments and
limitations they may face during and after
their treatment.
The Centegra STAR Program
®
is part of
Centegra’s full range of cancer services,
which begins with prevention and screening
and continues through treatment and
survivorship.
“The STAR Program
has been a huge help
because I can turn to the
people in it for advice
about how to handle
and manage problems
as they arise!
