Caring and
support
O
nce a month, a van arrives at Rita
Berks’ home in Fox Lake. A friendly
driver greets her at the door and walks with
her outside.
Berks, 84, rides to the Centegra Heart
Failure Center at Centegra Hospital–
McHenry to meet a nurse who helps her
manage the symptoms of her heart disease.
McHenry is 15 miles away and she doesn’t
have a car. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean
she misses out on the care that helps her
sustain her quality of life while navigating
her health care needs. The rides come
courtesy of the Patient Express program,

of a growing need
Ride program expansion needed to serve more
one of many community benefit services
Centegra Health System offers.
“It’s a big relief,” Berks says. “I know that
I’m being taken care of. I’m very glad the
Patient Express is there to help.”
A GROWING NEED
She isn’t alone. Many community members
of all ages utilize the Patient Express service
to and from appointments and treatments
because they have no other way of getting
there, says driver Lori Kirkelie. She and
other drivers make some 200 trips a week
connecting patients to Centegra services
as varied as wound care, behavioral health
appointments, cancer treatments and cardiac
rehab. They travel upward of 200,000 miles
on McHenry County roads each year.
Yet for all the miles driven and all the
people served, there are sometimes up to
30 people and more than 100 appointment
requests each month that the program is
unable to accommodate.
“We run at capacity most weeks,” says
patient support services manager Jen Frey.
Yet demand is only expected to increase.
A system of prioritizing helps ensure
people with the most immediate care needs are
