S
pring is in
full bloom—
a time
of rejuvenation
across McHenry
County and here
at Centegra Health
System.
This is
especially evident
on our campuses.
On page 3, we
share with you
details about
the newly
renovated
Emergency Department at Centegra Hospital–
McHenry, a project that will help us meet
the community’s needs for emergency and
trauma care.
Then we’ll shine the spotlight on one of our
comprehensive cancer services—the genetic
counseling program, featured on page 4. Learn
how genetic counselors at Centegra can help
certain people gain a better understanding of
their cancer risk.
On page 5, you’ll learn about some wonderful
ways to honor someone who has special
meaning in your life—and help advance local
health care at the same time.
To learn about the full range of stroke care
services available at Centegra Health System,
turn to page 7. Both Centegra hospitals have
earned primary stroke center certification from
The Joint Commission—a distinction that says
a great deal about our commitment to high-level
stroke care. On that page, we will also help you
recognize signs of stroke.
I hope you enjoy all that the spring season
has to offer. Enjoy this issue of
Health Today
, in
which you’ll discover many shining examples of
how we work to provide exceptional care close
to home.
HELPING KIDS
have a healthy
weight is an important goal
nationwide—including in McHenry
County. That’s why Centegra Health
System developed
Centegra Kids in
Motion, a new
program to help
kids stay healthy—
and lose weight if
needed.
It doesn’t stop
there.
“It’s a healthy kids
program,” says Laura Buthod, MD, a pediatrician with Centegra
Physician Care. “We help families learn healthy habits that can last
a lifetime.”
A HOLISTIC APPROACH
Even thin kids can have unhealthy eating habits, Dr. Buthod
says. At Centegra Kids in Motion, nutrition experts work with kids
and their parents to teach them about healthy ways—and delicious
foods—to eat.
According to Lauren Henke, a registered dietitian and Centegra
Kids in Motion coordinator, a personal trainer helps kids make
physical activity part of their day. Families also see a behavior
specialist to help them make these changes.
The class is eight weeks with seven hours of education and
seven hours of physical activity.
In order to give all children an opportunity to develop a healthy
lifestyle, scholarships are available to people who need financial
assistance.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Centegra Kids in Motion has already seen good outcomes, such
as weight loss and improved endurance, strength and flexibility.
Better yet, families are establishing healthier lifestyles.
“When young kids learn about nutrition and exercise, they have
the building blocks to make good choices in the future,” Henke
says.
